Marla Ahlgrimm Discusses Risk Factors of Heart Disease

Marla AhlgrimmHeart disease is generally not attributed to one single cause, says pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm. Several conditions and factors typically act in unison to diminish heart function. The issues may start in either the left or right ventricle. Either way, the heart is unable to do the necessary work of supplying blood to each major region of the body.

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, heart failure often affects women differently than men. The Framingham Heart Study studied the nature of heart failure in three separate generations of women and men and then noted the risk factors associated with this disease. The study’s researchers discovered that a number of conditions could be responsible for the onset of heart failure. Below, Marla Ahlgrimm discusses the most likely factors of heart failure in today’s women.

Coronary artery disease. After blood vessels narrow due to cholesterol buildup, blood flow to the heart muscle tissue can decrease. As a result, the tissue gradually deteriorates. Coronary artery disease is one of the leading sources of heart failure.

Hypertension. When blood pressure reaches a higher level, the heart is strained from working so hard. Marla Ahlgrimm shares that hypertension can raise the risk of heart failure three times or even higher in women.

Obesity. Obesity is a common risk factor for heart failure. In the Framingham research analysis, obese women were at 50 percent greater risk than women of normal weight.

Diabetes. Marla Ahlgrimm notes that diabetes cannot be a direct cause of heart failure. However, it promotes hypertension and coronary artery disease.

Severe lung disease. Conditions like COPD and pulmonary disease can reduce oxygen levels in the blood, meaning that the heart must work even harder to achieve full effect.

Marla Ahlgrimm advises a healthy diet and regular exercise for women who are concerned about heart disease. A physician can provide further insight about the inner workings of the heart. Annual checkups are strongly recommended.
