Diet and exercise certainly play a role in maintaining a healthy weight, says Marla Ahlgrimm. However, for some women, that simply isn’t enough. Insulin resistance is one of the most common unaddressed issues affecting women’s waistlines in America today.
Excessive belly fat and loss of muscle mass
In addition to weight gain, women with a hormone disorder may notice they store more fat, specifically around the belly. This is due to endocrine system stress and the production of cortisol and other hormones affecting muscle mass and fat production.
Hormones play a major role in the amount of energy a woman has from day to day, explains Marla Ahlgrimm. An underlying hormone imbalance may lend to feelings of sluggishness and can significantly impact mental clarity. Fluctuating hormones may also cause insomnia, which contributes significantly to irritability and fatigue and can make it more difficult to concentrate.
Hot flashes and sweating are common in women going through menopause, but may also pop up in women with other hormone disorders.
A telltale sign that something isn’t right with a woman’s hormones is a low libido, which can be lessened even more by insomnia and feelings of insecurity due to weight gain, says Marla Ahlgrimm.
Marla Ahlgrimm stresses that while many of these symptoms may be related to hormones, they may also be indicative of other disorders, diseases, or even poor nutrition. A simple blood test and consultation with a qualified doctor can determine if any of the above are due to hormones.
