Marla Ahlgrimm On Thyroid Disorder

Marla AhlgrimmAccording to retired hormone specialist Marla Ahlgrimm, thyroid disorder is a relatively common condition. The thyroid, which is a gland in the back of the throat, may produce too much or too little thyroid hormone.

Hyperthyroidism

When the thyroid gland produces too much metabolizing hormones, people may be diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. This is often caused, says Marla Ahlgrimm, by Graves’ disease, tumors, or thyroiditis. Hyperthyroidism can result in irritability, reduced menstruation, frequent bowel activity, and an increase in appetite.

Hypothyroidism

With hypothyroidism, Marla Ahlgrimm says the thyroid gland isn’t as functional as it should be. Hypothyroidism is the form of the disease that results in sudden and potentially excessive weight gain. People with hypothyroidism may feel depressed and experienced prolonged menstrual activity.

Many obese people have hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, obesity can trigger other health conditions, including depression, obesity, and heart disease. Marla Ahlgrimm notes that people with hypothyroidism may find it extremely difficult to lose weight even through diet and exercise.

Went to speak to a doctor

It is often difficult to diagnose a thyroid condition based on the symptoms alone. But if you find yourself experiencing weight loss or weight gain, fatigue, retaining fluid, or noticing unwelcome changes in your menstrual cycle, call your doctor for an exam. Keep in mind, however, that many other conditions can cause thyroid-like symptoms, says Marla Ahlgrimm. Your healthcare provider can help rule out other disorders.

Marla AhlgrimmMarla Ahlgrimm explains that you should feel comfortable talking with your physician any time something doesn’t feel right. If you do not, it is time to make an appointment with another primary care provider.

If you are diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, Marla Ahlgrimm says your doctor may offer a prescription to treat the condition, but you will likely always have to take your medicine to control symptoms.
